I wanted to see if I could create a full coloring book from scratch and get it live on Amazonโ€”without hiring a designer or spending a lot of money.

And guess what? I did it. In this post, Iโ€™m going to walk you through the exact steps I followed, using tools that are beginner-friendly and mostly free. If youโ€™ve been thinking about getting into passive income or starting a creative project, this is one of the easiest ways to get started.

Let me show you how I did it.

โœ… Step 1: I Picked a Theme That Sells

Before I touched a design tool, I went on Amazon and looked at whatโ€™s already selling.
I browsed a few coloring books that caught my eyeโ€”then I asked myself:

  • Is this niche popular?
  • Can I put my own twist on it?
  • Would I enjoy making this?

This partโ€™s important. You need to do a little research so you’re not guessing.
It doesn’t have to be complicatedโ€”just find a book you like, see what works, and build your own version with a new angle.

๐ŸŽจ Step 2: I Used Colorfly to Create the Pages

Once I knew my theme, I jumped over to Colorfly.art.
This site uses AI to create coloring pages. You just type in a prompt, and it gives you detailed, printable images you can download right to your computer.

Here’s what I did:

  • Typed in a few prompts related to my theme
  • Chose the style and amount of detail I wanted
  • Downloaded the finished coloring pages

I recommend creating at least 25โ€“40 pages to give your book enough value.

๐Ÿ“ Step 3: I Got the Book Size from Amazon KDP

Before heading into Canva, I went to Amazonโ€™s KDP Cover Calculator to get the exact dimensions I needed.

I selected:

  • Trim size: 8.5โ€ x 11โ€
  • Page count: however many pages I planned to include
  • Paper type: white or cream

That gave me a downloadable template and exact dimensions to build both my interior pages and full cover.

๐Ÿงฐ Step 4: I Built the Book in Canva

Then I went to Canva.com and set up two projects:

  1. One for the interior pages using the trim size
  2. One for the cover using the full KDP template (front, spine, back)

In Canva, I:

  • Uploaded all my coloring pages
  • Lined them up page-by-page
  • Kept the layout simpleโ€”black and white with clear borders
  • Designed the front cover and back cover with a bold, clean look

You donโ€™t need Canva Pro for thisโ€”the free version works just fine.

๐Ÿš€ Step 5: I Uploaded Everything to Amazon KDP

Once my PDFs were exported, I logged into Amazon KDP and did the following:

  • Filled in my book details (title, subtitle, keywords, etc.)
  • Uploaded the interior and cover files
  • Previewed the digital proof
  • Hit Publish

Amazon took about 3 to 10 business days to approve my book. Once it was live, they gave me a shareable link.

๐Ÿ’ก Why I Like This Method

There are a few reasons I think this works so well:

  • Itโ€™s beginner-friendly
  • It uses free or cheap tools
  • You donโ€™t need to draw or hire a designer
  • You can repeat this process for different niches
  • And once itโ€™s published, it becomes passive income

Itโ€™s a great alternative to things like โ€œdelivery jobs in my areaโ€ or side hustles that require you to trade time for money every day.

๐Ÿ“ข Final Thoughts from Me

If youโ€™ve been sitting on an idea but didnโ€™t know where to startโ€”this is your sign.

You donโ€™t need to be a pro. You just need a concept, a few tools, and a little follow-through. The best part? You could have your own book live on Amazon in just a few days.
